What are ABCDEs?

Melanoma is the most serious skin cancer. Knowing the warnings signs can help you with early detection. Knowing the ABCDEs will help you know what you should be looking for.

    • Asymmetrical – If you draw a line through a mole, and the two halves do not match, it is a warning sign for melanoma.
    • Border - The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven with the edges being scalloped or notched.
    • Color – If a mole has a variety of colors that is another warning signal. Melanoma can be different shades of brown or it may also become red, white, or blue.
    • Diameter – If a mole is larger than 1/4inch or 6mm it is suspicious for Melanoma.
    • Evolving - Be on alert if you detect that a mole is changing or evolving in any way. This includes size, shape, color, or consistency.

What is Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Squamous cell carcinoma is a common form of cancer that develops in the outer layer of the skin. It is usually not life threatening but can become aggressive if left untreated.

What is Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma affects the new cells within the skin. Basal cell carcinoma usually has slow growth and often doesn't show up for many years.

What Kinds of Treatments Are Available?

Treatment for skin cancer usually involves removing the abnormal cells. In some cases, removing surrounding skin may be necessary to ensure that any extension of abnormal cells is also removed. Topical medications and chemotherapies designed specifically for skin cancer may also be used depending on your specific circumstances.

Should I Perform Self Skin Exams?

Spotting warnings signs, such as the ABCDEs, early on can mean the difference in stopping cancer before it spreads. For most individuals a once a month self check enables them to spot any noticeable changes in the skin.
