The GentleYAG Laser System
Tweezing, waxing, and shaving unwanted hair is a never-ending task. Fortunately, laser hair removal offers a better solution. Our Fort Lauderdale, FL, dermatologists, Dr. Barry Galitzer, Dr. Sari Fien, and Dr. John Perrotto of Skin Center, explain how laser hair removal works.
How can lasers remove hair?
Laser light targets the pigments that give your hair its color. Visible light pulses generated by the laser heat hair, which damages the follicles. Thanks to laser treatment, hair growth slows or stops completely.
What kind of lasers are used for hair removal?
We use the GentleYAG laser system in our Fort Lauderdale office. The laser light is directed at your skin from a handheld device that produces a narrow beam of light. Because the light only targets your hairs, it won't damage your skin.
Although laser skin removal treatment won't hurt your skin, it can feel a little hot. Thanks to the built-in cooling function offered by the GentleYAG laser, treatment is much more comfortable. The device sprays a fine layer of cooling cryogen every time it directs a pulse of laser light at your skin.
What areas of the body can be treated with the GentleYAG laser?
The GentleYAG laser is effective for removing hair on the:
- Bikini area
How many treatments will I need?
Most people need between six to 10 treatments to reduce or eliminate hair growth. At any point of time, your hairs are at various stages in the growth cycle. Some are actively growing, while others are dormant. Multiple treatments help ensure that all hairs in an area are eventually removed.
What can I expect when I arrive for my GentleYAG treatment?
Before you receive your laser treatment, a topical anesthetic will be applied to your skin. Thanks to this anesthetic and the cooling features offered by the laser, you should only experience mild pain during the treatment. In fact, many people report that the laser pulses aren't particularly painful and feel like rubber bands snapping against their skin.
