What is acne?

Acne occurs when the skin’s natural oil glands overproduce a substance called sebum. Sebum enters the pores and causes dead skin cells to become trapped, creating a blockage. The blocked pore then becomes infected or inflamed, resulting in a pimple. Acne most often appears on the face and neck, but can also occur on the shoulders, back, and chest.

Do I have acne?

Acne has several forms, the most common of which being red bumps called papules found on the facial skin. However, acne can also appear in other forms, such as:

  • Blackheads: Open blocked pores appearing as black dots on the skin
  • Whiteheads: Closed blocked pores appearing as white dots on the skin
  • Pustules: Puss-filled papules, often referred to as pimples
  • Nodules: Solid lumps under the skin
  • Cystic Lesions: Puss-filled nodules

Can a dermatologist help my acne?

A dermatologist is a medical doctor specialized in diagnosing and treating diseases and conditions of the skin, hair, and nails. If you have acne, a dermatologist can help you find a suitable skin care routine, prescribe medications and treatments, and help you manage your skin conditions. Treatment options include extractions, blue light therapy or laser treatment. We also offer acne products that help your skin and reduce blemishes.
